Peda –

Peda is a traditional Indian sweet dish. In India no celebration or festival is considered to be complete without peda. In India, most of the sweet dishes are prepared by using milk and sugar so does peda. Peda have all goodness and richness of milk. You can consume peda during navratri vrat or fast. Peda is gluten free sweet dish.

Traditionally peda is prepared by using milk, sugar and cardamom so you can prepare peda at your home simply with these ingredient. It is small round flatten balls and melts in your mouth when you take a bite of it. It is very soft and smooth in texture. While traditional method of preparing peda is very long and lengthy, I am giving you instant peda recipe, you can make this wonderful sweet dish within 10 minutes by using only 3 ingredient milk, milk powder and sweetened condensed milk.

Desserts or sweets are part of Indian culture. During any festival or celebration, offering sweet is a ritual.  India is a country where we celebrate lots of festivals, whether it is festival of light – Diwali or festival of colours – Holi, or festival of bonding Raksha Bandhan.  If you roam around you can smell aromas of sweets every where. Whether it is an engagement ceremony or marriage or even scoring good marks in exam or getting job, we share every good news with our relative and friends with a box of peda.

Origin of Peda –

Peda is termed as prasad as it is made with milk. Milk is considered to be pure and pious in Indian culture. Peda is a delicacy of Mathura know as Mathura peda and are very popular in India. Mathura is a birth place of shri Krishna. Mathura peda is the main attraction to visitors during their visit to Mathura. During Janmashtami pedas are offered to god and people eat it to break their fast. Whenever I visit mathura always buy some extra boxes of Mathura peda to distribute among my relatives and friends.

Navtrati festival is going on, and you can also consume these peda during Vrat as they are made with milk and sugar.

There are different varieties of peda famous in different states of India. Milk peda, Kesar peda, Mathura peda are some of the very famous varieties. Mathura peda are different from regular peda which is dark brown in colour. To give that dark brown colour to peda, it’s mixture is roasted for longer time until turns golden brown and then peda is rolled over the sugar.

I am preparing peda with cardamom and saffron. Saffron will give a perfect refreshing golden colour to the peda. You can easily make this sweet delicacy to your home. Try this recipe to impress your relatives or guest visiting you during any festival or celebration. You can also gift these home made peda to your friends and relatives when visiting them.

First time I prepared peda with traditional method, using milk, sugar and cardamom. It is lengthy and time taking recipe, because you have to cook milk for long time to make mawa, but when you prepared with traditional method taste is incomparable.

This is the instant recipe, you can make this delicious sweet at home in very less time with only 3 ingredient milk, milk powder and condensed milk.

I have also made some more recipes for vrat or fast specially for Navratri in my navratri recipe collection which includes recipes such as coconut barfi, khajur barfi for dessert. And singhara pakora, kuttu paratha, falahari chaat, sabudana khichadi and sabudana vada for savoury food.

Important Notes –

  1.  Cook mixture in low heat as it can burn easily.
  2. To check whether mixture is ready or not, take a small amount of mixture in your hand, lift very carefully it will be hot and you might burn your fingers. If you are able to make into balls and the peda mixture doesn’t stick to your hand then it is considered ready to be taken off the heat. If the mixture sticks to your hand continue to cook for another minute or two. Check again.
  3. Instead of milk powder and milk you can directly use mawa to make pedas.
  4. You can garnish peda with any choice of your nuts like dried cranberries or raisins.
  5. Peda easily turns hard, so store it in air tight jar in fridge.
