What is modak
Modaknor also known as Modhaka in Kannada and Modhakam in Tamil, is a sweet Indian dumpling recipe. It is more commonly prepared during Lord ganesha festival or Ganesh chaturthi as prasad. Stories also tell that Parvathi expressed a wish that all the devotees will always offer 21 dumplings or modak to ganesha as the 21 modak were enough to satisfy both lord Shiva and parvathi. It looks like momo but made of rice flour or some tomes maida too. Sweet jaggery mixed coconut is also added as the filling in it. It is also very popular in the states of Maharashtra and Goa and in the Konkan region, also known as ukadiche modak. It is also prepared in Japan and known as kangidan.
Variations of modak
There are different variations of modak you can see which are unique in their own way. mainly there are two types Steamed and fried modak. the steamed variation of modak os commonly eaten with ghee and the fried can be consumed directly. It is one of the popular and delicious sweet recipe. you can try any variation of this recipe but this recipe is more delicious and simple to prepare without any mould.
How to prepare modak?
It is very easy to prepare modak and I have also shared all the detailed steps involved in the preparation of it in this article. First you have to prepare filling for it which is done by mixing and cooking desiccated coconut and jaggery and then for modak rice flour is mixed in milk and cooked until it comes together and then it is filled and and steamed in a steamer until done. Ghee is also added before enjoying or serving it. Important points
- The outer layer of Modak should be very thin.
- The stuffing shouldn’t be very hot else it can break the modak while folding.

Ingredients
For filling
- 2 tsp ghee
- 1 cup desiccated coconut
- 1/2 cup jaggery
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
For modak
- 1 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp milk
- a pinch salt
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 cup rice flour
Instructions
For filling
- To prepare modak first we have to prepare filling and for that add ghee and desiccated coconut in a pan and roast it for 2 minutes on low heat
- add jaggery and mix it well
- cook well until jaggery is dissolved
- add nutmeg powder and cardamom powder and mix it well
- let it cool
For modak
- now in an another pan add water, milk, salt and ghee and mix it
- boil it
- Reduce the heat and add rice flour and mix it well until it comes together
- turn off the heat
- leave it for 10 minutes
- transfer it to a bowl and let it cool a little
- now knead it and take a small portion and roll it to make a ball
- coat it with rice flour
- use your fingers to stretch it
- add the filling, close it and seal it properly by making a drop like shape
- make slits using butter knife on the sides, finger distance apart and press it a little to expand the slits.
- place it in a steamer
- cover and steam for 15 minutes on medium high heat
- add ghee for garnishing
- modak is ready
