Dal palak recipe or dhaba style dal palak is one of the protein rich healthy Indian dal prepared with lentils and spinach. It is prepared in almost every part of the country may be with slight variations. As the lentils goes well with spinach Dal palak is quite popular curry in India. You can even find this dal in restaurants. It is also one of the authentic Indian dal which goes well with any Indian bread or rice.

This Dhaba style palak dal curry is so delicious which you will love every bit of it. I have cooked this dal palak with toor dal and spinach tempered with red chillies and cumin seeds and not to forget ginger and garlic which makes it so flavourful. It is also quite easy to prepare but time consuming.

Palak is rich in iron, calcium and vitamin k and thats why it is considered as one of the healthiest green leaf for cooking and many Indian cuisines are also prepared with palak. you can also find many variations of this curry as well. Important points

  1. do not over cook after adding palak/spinach
  2. you can skip onion and garlic for no onion-garlic version but it will alter the taste

dal palak

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ghee
  • 2 cups water
  • 250 gram spinach
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/3 tsp hing
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp garlic
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tsp lime juice
  • handful coriander

for tadka

  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder

Instructions

  • take toor dal soaked in water for 15 minutes add it in a pressure cooker
  • add turmeric, chilli powder, salt, ghee and water
  • close the lid and cook until 2 whistles on medium heat
  • take spinach and cut it into thin stripes.
  • now add ghee, cumin seeds, hing, ginger and garlic in pan
  • fry it for a minute
  • add green chillies, and fry it a little
  • now add onion 
  • fry until it becomes translucent
  • add tomatoes
  • cook until it becomes soft
  • add salt, chilli powder and coriander powder
  • mix it well
  • add the dal and mix it
  • now add the palak and mix it
  • boil it for 2 minutes
  • add lime juice and coriander leaves
  • mix it well

for tadka

  • add ghee and cumin seeds
  • let it crackle 
  • add dry red chillies and chilli powder
  • mix it
  • add it to the dal
  • dal palak is ready
